Viewfinder: Napa Mayor Takes a Spin on Bike to Work Day
Napa cyclist/photographer Tim Thulin captured Mayor Jill Techel and other riders on the annual celebration of pedal power; and Napa Patch captured Tim.
Thursday's annual Bike to Work Day brought out the cyclists, many of whom took advantage of "energizer stations" operated by the Napa County Bicycle Coalition at Blue Oak School, Dwight Murray Plaza and other locations where pedal-powered commuters could refuel on snacks and Ritual coffee and pick up free shoulder bags and other swag.
At the plaza stop, bike riders could even enjoy smoothies made in a bicycle-powered blender developed by Napan Chino Yip, former proprietor of the First Squeeze juice bar in the location now occupied by Bistro Sabor.
Tim Thulin, a dedicated Napa cyclist who has pedaled his way clear across the United States, used his camera to capture some of the action downtown, including Mayor Jill Techel biking her way toward City Hall.
Thulin and another long-distance Napa biker, Michael Fitzgerald, also stopped by Napa Patch office hours at Starbucks in the Redwood Plaza and graciously submitted to having their photos taken.
For one Napa Valley College student, bicycling is more than transportation--it's a political act and the inspiration for an original, bilingual acoustic rap. Find out more and listen to his "Bicycle Rap Song" here. Can you hear the bicycle wheel?
