The Last Days of the Cinedome?

With a south Napa multiplex coming in 2012, the days of our downtown cinema are numbered. But did they have to turn off the heat already?

I spent last Friday night shivering in the cold with Cher and Christina Aguilera.

No, really. I did, from my seat at the Cinedome: The superstar singers were up on the screen, and that's lucky for them: They couldn't feel the cold.

My gal pal and I, along with many other young Napa women on the night in question, had made our way to the Cinedome to watch the singing-and-dancing movie sensation Burlesque. It was a cool December night, dropping 10 degrees by the hour. When I bought my ticket for the 7 p.m. showing at the pink-domed movie theater on Pearl Street, I was wearing a wool coat, knit cap and scarf. So why were my teeth chattering halfway through Aguilera's performance?

It neared 55 degrees inside the theater that night. My friend and I sat with our teeth literally rattling in our heads. I intermittently convulsed from the cold. I'd heard rumors that the Cinedome was going to be shut down and, eventually, torn down within the next couple of years-- but did they have to surrender the heating already? The seat next to me was out-of-order, and the theater lights flickered on and off occasionally.

It gave me a little reassurance to read in the Napa Valley Register that a new movie complex was, indeed, confirmed to be built near the marshlands in South Napa, behind Target. But the new multiplex won't be ready to welcome Napans till 2012.

So what's a movie-loving Napa girl to do for the next year-plus, until the new cinema comes online? Keep going to the Cinedome as it crumbles into obsolescence, or just sign up for Netflix?

Are you going to miss the Cinedome? Do you think the ownrs should keep up the maintenance until the new theater's debut? Tell us in the comments.

Chuck- It's true, the theater's a little run down. I just wish we didn't have to wait until 2012 to get a new one!

The latest Cinedome issue was last Fri night asking for an ID from a female who is 19 3/4 yrs old in order to attend a PG13 movie. She didn't have her license with her, so couldn't see the movie. REALLY Cinedome?!! I agree with asking for age verification for R movies but PG13? She looks her age but is just shorter than average. Over Zealous, and control on patrons not where it should be. Also they never repaired their musty smells after the flood, it's sad....

It's the Candlestick Park of movie theaters.
