Video: Unity League, Oxbow Merchants Raise Funds for Japan

With food, wine and Taiko drumming, all ages gathered for a Red Cross benefit organized by Napa's Unity League.

Kids brought baggies of change, grown-ups pulled out their folding money and merchants donated a portion of their sales to the Red Cross during an Oxbow Public Market fund-raiser for Japan on Sunday.

The event, which included performances by the Napa Taiko drum ensemble, was organized by Unity League Napa Valley, the service club for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered Napans and their allies.

Deb Stallings of the Unity League said Oxbow owner Steve Carlin welcomed the group's idea and market merchants agreed to donate a portion of their evening's sales to the Napa chapter of the Red Cross for relief efforts in Japan.

Unity League volunteers also sold raffle tickets, held a silent auction and collected cash donations during the four-hour fund-raiser.

Another community fund-raiser for Japan relief, specifically benefiting Napa's hard-hit sister city Iwanuma, is scheduled for March 27 at the Napa Valley Opera House.

Great news from Deb Stallings this a.m. via Twitter: "We raised over $1400 in just raffle and change buckets alone. Awaiting tally from eateries."

Why, thank you, David. It's my first iMovie and I see only room for improvement -- but it's hard go too far wrong with money, balloons, Taiko drumming and vivacious Deb Stallings.
