Downtown Napa is the place to be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Aug. 2 for food, music, friends and fun. But this year, we leave our four-footed friends at home: Market officials say the no-dogs rule will be enforced.
The long-awaited return of Chefs' Market takes place tonight in downtown Napa from 5 to 9 p.m. According to the Napa Downtown Association, which hosts the free event, The Napa Chefs' Market features two cooking demonstrations each night, at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., featuring world-renowned chefs, who are also Napa locals. After the demonstration, audience members may enjoy a sample of the food paired with a taste of wine from Downtown Napa tasting rooms. Both are free of charge. Along with cooking demonstrations, live music, fresh produce, family entertainment, food trucks and art, Chefs' Market offers assorted opportunities to support local nonprofits. The Napa Valley Register is reporting that hotelier Rick Swig is the new owner of the north Napa motel, which he plans to renovate and rename.
The John Muir Inn in north Napa has been sold for $6.8 million to a local hotelier and consultant who plans to rename and "rebrand" the 60-room motel, according to a report in the Napa Valley Register. New owner Rick Swig told the newspaper he will affiliate the "underperforming" property with the Choice Hotels chain as a Quality Inn, renaming it Napa Winery Inn. Swig, who said he will spend another $1 million to renovate the inn, did not purchase the adjacent restaurant formerly occupied by Marie Callendar's and listed for $3.3 million, according to the Register report. In a blonde wig, bikini and stick-on tattoos, Beth Rypins of Napa won the 5-mile kayak portion of the Great Russian River Race, which drew more than 400 paddlers and a total of 700 people to the Sonoma County event. She also won Best-Dressed.

A new Zagat blog post on the upcoming restaurant in Steve Hasty's Fagiani building links back to one of the first articles Napa Patch ever published, a two-part history of the Main Street landmark made notorious by a 1974 murder.
Where does Zagat blogger James Mulcahy go to find out more about Napa? Napa Patch, of course. The Napa Patch archives. Mulcahy's new post, "AvroKo and Brad Farmerie Headed to Napa for New Project," doesn't reveal anything we hadn't already reported in our article "Fagiani Building Tenant Hiring Chefs," back in March. But when referring to the building's "storied past," blogger Mulcahy delves even further into our reporting, linking the phrase "the 1974 murder of Anita Andrews" to the first installment in our series on the history of the Main Street landmark, "Inside the Fagiani Building," published when Napa Patch first launched in November, 2010. The Zagat post does have one thing we don't: a cool old photograph. But we've looked into …

As long rumored and widely expected, the coffeehouse chain has submitted an application for the recently-vacated Eye Works shop at First and Main streets, according to the Napa Valley Register.
Napa city officials have confirmed that Starbucks Coffee has applied to make facade changes at the former location of The Eye Works at the corner of First and Main streets, according to a report in the Napa Valley Register. While officials could not confirm the coffee chain has a lease agreement for the space, the Register reports that the application includes sign review and outdoor seating. Members of the group Napa Local, which was formed in opposition to the rumored advent of a downtown Starbucks across the street from the Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Company, are pondering their next move, according to comments on the group's Facebook page Wednesday night. How does this news strike you? Please tell us in the comments. Do you subscribe …
