“We are urging residents to re-think their commute and leave their car at home at least twice a week - take transit, work from home, carpool or bike to work instead of driving alone,” said Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the Air District.
It seems like just the other day that the winter Spare the Air season ended. Now the summer season is upon us, as warm weather arrives bringing with it high levels of toxic ozone pollution. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is encouraging area residents to reduce their driving. The largest source of smog in the Bay Area is tailpipe exhaust, according to Air District officials. “Reducing the number of cars on our roads remains the biggest air quality challenge we face in the Bay Area,” said Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the Air District. “We are urging residents to re-think their commute and leave their car at home at least twice a week - take transit, work from home, carpool or bike to work instead of driving alone.” When…
The City of Napa has named the Land Trust of Napa County as the next owner of the historic Borreo building.
The City of Napa issued the following announcement May 3: On May 1, 2012, the City Council directed staff to negotiate an agreement with the Land Trust of Napa County for the sale of the City-owned Borreo Building. The City will now enter into an Exclusive Negotiation Agreement (ENA) with the Land Trust, outlining timeframes and specific activities to occur prior to the sale of the building. Negotiations could take up to six months with the sale to be complete in late 2012 or early 2013. In November 2011, the City issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the sale of this historic landmark building. Four teams submitted proposals – Enea Properties; The Borreo Winery Cooperative; Paul Jr. Designs; and the Land Trust. During the process, …

I am disturbed with the story in the BrandX paper today, seems even the land trust is not above taking a building that is on the nat. reg. and adding windows on the west side. I don't know if they plan to just do it, or try and get special dispensation to do it but it will probably remove it from the registry. Ususally they won't let a building on the list if it has been changed in a major way.   more ›
After months of public hearings, the Napa County Conservation, Development and Planning Commission could not agree on the controversial Napa Pipe proposal. Next stop for the developer: the county board of supervisors, likely next month.
Traffic, water concerns and sprawl were among the reasons cited in statements read by two members of the Napa County Conservation, Development and Planning Commission as they opposed the controversial Napa Pipe proposal Wednesday afternoon. Commission members Heather Phillips and Mark Pope had reserved comment at last month's commission hearing on Napa Pipe, at which the other three commissioners all expressed support for housing on the site. Pope, who spent years on American Canyon's planning commission before moving up to the county commission, called it "the hardest decision i have ever made in this capacity." Pope added that "a smaller version of this project should be built somewhere that is consistent with the county plan." But he …

I agree with Tom, well stated. As a third generation Napan, I am eager to see what developers can do for the locals. The homes mixed in with shopping sounds ideal for my entire family.   more ›
The Napa County Conservation, Development and Planning Commission meets today to continue, and likely conclude, its protracted public hearing and deliberations on Napa Pipe. Peter Jensen from the Napa Valley Register catches us up.
The Napa City Council unanimously approved the Downtown Specific Plan to map out future development in the city core, according to the Napa Valley Register. That includes returning First through Fourth streets to their original two-way traffic pattern.
A long-sought "road map" for the future of downtown Napa got nothing but thumbs up from the city council Tuesday night. Under the unanimously-approved Downtown Specific Plan, two-way traffic will return to a series of downtown streets that were converted to one-way decades ago. Council members did not agree to add a provision, proposed by the grassroots Napa Local group, that would have limited the ability of "formula businesses" like Starbucks to open downtown. The Napa Valley Register provides a detailed report on the meeting in "Downtown plan, two way streets unanimously approved." Is your event listed in our calendar? May 2 is the target date for the permanent closure of the Coombs Street bridge to vehicle traffic. A pedestrian/bike/wheelchair bridge over Napa Creek will be the only way to reach Clinton and Brown streets from the new northern end of Coombs Street.
Napa drivers will likely be pulling a few U-turns on Coombs Street north of Pearl Street in the next few weeks: According to signs posted at that intersection and announcements from the city of Napa, Coombs Street will be closed permanently at Napa Creek starting May 2. A city bulletin advises: (T)he Coombs Street Bridge over Napa Creek will be permanently removed. This will eliminate the vehicle traffic connection from Coombs to Clinton-Brown Streets. Pedestrian access will remain using the new pedestrian bridge. At the same time, a new bus turn-around will go into use in the parking lot on the northeast side of the Coombs-Pearl intersection. Eight parking spaces will remain in this lot after restriping for the bus turn-around. Also, one …
At a district-level caucus in Santa Rosa Sunday, two Napa women were elected as delegates to the convention in Charlotte, N.C. in September.
Two Napa women are among the 547 delegates the California Democratic Party is sending to represent the state at the party's national convention in Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 3 through Sept. 6. Joanne Gifford and Betty Malmgren were elected by their fellow Democrats at a district-level caucus in Santa Rosa Sunday, Malmgren said. A member of Occupy Napa, Gifford describes herself in her Patch blogger profile as "Mom, Community and Political Activist and Fierce Advocate for Social Justice." Malmgren directs the Community Relations Office at Napa Valley College and publishes a newspaper for English-language learners, Easy English Times. She has attended national conventions in the past, Malmgren said, but this is her first trip to one as a …

A fun new festival for all ages made its debut Saturday at Copia.
I can't wait till Thursday: Here's a five-star, flag-waving shout-out to the folks who brought us the first-ever Napa Bike Fest Saturday at what remains of Copia. On a glorious Saturday, cyclists and strollers of all ages enjoyed live music, a swap meet, group rides — including one for kids — wonderfully weird bike-inspired sculptures by Kurt Wold and a series of cycling-themed films. Along with all the activity, you could buy food, beer, wine and coffee and refill your reusable water bottle at a free water station. Thank you to all the volunteers of the Napa County Bicycle Coalition, a.k.a. Napa Bike, for putting together such a terrific day for Napans! County supervisors Brad Wagenknecht and Bill Dodd were both spotted at the festival, …

Napa is a finalist in the U.S. Conference of Mayors Livability Awards program, says Mayor Techel at the Oxbow Public Market Tuesday. What makes Napa more livable than other cities with fewer than 100,000 residents? Tell us!
The city of Napa is a finalist in the U.S. Conference of Mayors Livability Awards program, said Napa Mayor Jill Techel Tuesday afternoon. Sponsored by Waste Management, Inc., the awards program "honors mayors and their city governments for developing programs that enhance the quality of life in urban areas," according to the website http://usmayors.org/citylivabilityawards/. Techel was at Oxbow Public Market with city spokesperson and local actor-playwright Barry Martin to create a three-minute video, required by the awards program, highlighting the city's eligibility for the award for most livable city with population under 100,000. "We're showing the flood control project and all of the economic development that has come from it," Techel…

The air is fine, it hasn't become any worse since last year, didn't get any colder over winter, and we somehow had far more spare-the-air days this past winter. The BAAQMD is simply testing our tolerance to see how far they can regulate the public before people say "Enough is enough!" Notice how all the ailments listed in the article are followed with 'according to the Air District'. Is the Air …   more ›
