Fired Teacher Accused of Racist, Porn Emails

A former Napa teacher and coach, whose unexplained dismissal in 2007 drew a reported "storm of protest," has been placed on leave from his Contra Costa County district job for emailing racist and pornographic jokes.

An American Canyon man whose teaching job with the Napa Valley Unified School District was terminated in 2007 without public explanation has been placed on leave from his latest job in the West Contra Costa County Unified School District, according to multiple media reports. The East Bay Express reported May 2 that Matt Stewart "was caught forwarding numerous racist, misogynistic, and pornographic emails to fellow employees" in West Contra Costa County, where he was athletic director for the school district. The emails — as many as 250 of them, according to one district employee — are difficult to describe in a family publication, but reportedly included graphic images, comparisons of Barack and Michelle Obama to apes and explicit sex …

Teachers Go Hip-Hop to Motivate Kids

To get students pumped up for high achievement on their annual standardized tests, the staff at Napa Valley Language Academy created a music video called "I Study Then I Know It."

There's not much Napa teachers won't do to help motivate their students to achieve academic goals. Local elementary school teachers have kissed pigs, donned costumes, climbed on roofs and rented limos to take students out for ice cream as rewards for their attainments in reading and test-taking. Napa Valley Language Academy, the county's only dual-immersion charter school teaching children in both English and Spanish, goes all-out for the spring bout of STAR testing (California's mandatory Standardized Testing And Reporting, which starts in second grade). In this music video, the entire school staff—from principal Deb Wallace, at the wheel of the campus golf cart loaded with "TOP SECRET TESTS," to the lunch lady in her apron—busts some …

Thank you for joining the conversation, Mario. Principal Deb told me the kids have been getting into your video when they watch it before testing. And I can relate: Before exams at Harvard, I used to play "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane as loudly as conditions permitted, and several times in a row. I also enjoy your videos and invite you to post them directly on Napa Patch whenever you like, …   more ›

Redwood Principal Takes Top Vintage Job

Mike Pearson is the next principal of Vintage High School, according to the Napa Valley Register.

The longtime principal of Redwood Middle School is stepping up to the top job at Vintage High School, according to a report in the Napa Valley Register. Mike Pearson replaces departing Vintage principal Craig Lewis, who leaves at the end of the current school year to marry his fiancée in southern California, the Register's Isabelle Dills reports in "Pearson named next principal of Vintage."  When he takes his new job this summer, Pearson leaves a middle school with about 1,000 students in grades six through eight for a comprehensive four-year high school with more than twice the enrollment. The tasks of easing his transition and finding a new Redwood principal now fall to the Napa Valley Unified School District administrative staff and …

Maybe it’s your own child, who received all A’s on her report card. Tell us, tell the entire community, who did something special and should receive this praise. You can even add photos, videos and pdfs, and link to YouTube videos. Not feeling all that positive this week? Would you rather sound off on what’s bothering you? No worries, we have a forum for that as well: Here's the place to join or start the conversation.

NVC President Takes Job in Virginia

Napa Valley College president Edna Baehre-Kolovani and her husband, who opened a resale shop on First Street last year, are moving back to the East Coast where she will head Tidewater Community College in Virginia.

Two years after Edna Baehre relocated from Pennsylvania to become president/superintendent of Napa Valley College, she is returning to the East Coast. Baehre-Kolovani, who married fellow East Coaster Bill Kolovani last year, has been named the fifth permanent president of Tidewater Community College, according to a press release issued Monday by Virginia Community Colleges. She was hired in 2010 to replace Napa Valley College president Chris McCarthy, who died suddenly of natural causes in 2009. Her new job back East begins in July, according to the press release, which describes Tidewater as the largest provider of higher education and workforce development services in Hampton Roads - served more than 46,000 students in 2010-11. The 16th …

Yes, I am surprised and saddened that so much money was spent by the college board; first in the selection process in 2010 to hire her from the East coast and second, 220,000 dollars was pretty much wasted on a year's salary when a person in a job like president can barely get her feet on the ground in a year's time. Now she is going back to her home grounds and a new person has to be selected at…   more ›
