A former Napa teacher and coach, whose unexplained dismissal in 2007 drew a reported "storm of protest," has been placed on leave from his Contra Costa County district job for emailing racist and pornographic jokes.
An American Canyon man whose teaching job with the Napa Valley Unified School District was terminated in 2007 without public explanation has been placed on leave from his latest job in the West Contra Costa County Unified School District, according to multiple media reports. The East Bay Express reported May 2 that Matt Stewart "was caught forwarding numerous racist, misogynistic, and pornographic emails to fellow employees" in West Contra Costa County, where he was athletic director for the school district. The emails — as many as 250 of them, according to one district employee — are difficult to describe in a family publication, but reportedly included graphic images, comparisons of Barack and Michelle Obama to apes and explicit sex …

In a blonde wig, bikini and stick-on tattoos, Beth Rypins of Napa won the 5-mile kayak portion of the Great Russian River Race, which drew more than 400 paddlers and a total of 700 people to the Sonoma County event. She also won Best-Dressed.
Napan Beth Rypins, a former professional river rafter and paddler for 25 years who owns Wine Country CrossFit, won overall first place in the five-mile kayak competition during Saturday's Second Annual Great Russian River Race in Healdsburg. Rypins told Healdsburg Patch she had been off the river for a while, but when she heard about last year's event, she decided to dust off her paddling chops and jump in for the 2012 return of the 5-mile river race. "Since I had the advantage of experience, I decided to start way back and work myself up, picking people off," said Rypins, who also won the day's "Best Dressed" award, sporting a blonde wig, bikini and pasted-on tattoos. "I had to work really hard to pick people off, but I did it," Rypins …

A fun new festival for all ages made its debut Saturday at Copia.
I can't wait till Thursday: Here's a five-star, flag-waving shout-out to the folks who brought us the first-ever Napa Bike Fest Saturday at what remains of Copia. On a glorious Saturday, cyclists and strollers of all ages enjoyed live music, a swap meet, group rides — including one for kids — wonderfully weird bike-inspired sculptures by Kurt Wold and a series of cycling-themed films. Along with all the activity, you could buy food, beer, wine and coffee and refill your reusable water bottle at a free water station. Thank you to all the volunteers of the Napa County Bicycle Coalition, a.k.a. Napa Bike, for putting together such a terrific day for Napans! County supervisors Brad Wagenknecht and Bill Dodd were both spotted at the festival, …

Do you have something to rave about? Tell us, tell the entire community here. You can even add photos, videos and pdfs, and link to YouTube videos.
When was the last time you took a moment to praise someone for a good deed, or yelled out to tell everyone how impressed you are with someone? Come on and give a shout-out to the person or group in our community you feel deserves the praise. Maybe that’s someone at the grocery store who found your wallet and turned it in. Maybe it’s your own child, who received all A’s on her report card. Tell us, tell the entire community, who did something special and should receive this praise. You can even add photos, videos and pdfs, and link to YouTube videos. Not feeling all that positive this week? Would you rather sound off on what’s bothering you? No worries, we have a forum for that as well: Here's the place to join or start the conversation.

Contest closed at 9 a.m.! Watch for the winner at noon. This week's Readers' Choice Award goes to the best place in Napa to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
How will you be celebrating St. Patrick's Day this Saturday? We can't all visit the old sod (Ireland) where Napa County health education specialist Cara Mae McGarry was traveling this week. Fortunately, Napa offers a panorama of St. Patrick's Day festivities, from corned-beef dinners to concerts. Not all fall on the 17th, so you can spread your celebration out over two or three days if you like. To help proclaim your favorite in this week's contest, there's more involved than just voting in the poll: The winner will be decided by a mixed tally of votes, positive comments and positive ratings on the business listings linked below. If you own or manage one of the businesses in our contest, please be sure to "Claim" your listing! This allows …
